Academic Social Networking

Yet another social networking site popped up on my radar yesterday, so I decided to take a look at it. It’s called Academici, in theory it’s a social networking site for Academic-related work. However, what it actually is is something much poorer, and more useless. In a nutshell: You can only provide a scant amount […]

A Solution to Death on the Internet

I was reading an article yesterday discussing the problem of when people die (in real life) their virtual data is left to live (potentially forever) in the system. Now, according to a Metafilter post, a number of potential solutions have cropped up and seemingly died (no pun intended) off. Most of these applications are set […]

Modern Visual Programming

Today, the topic of Visual Programming happened to come up a couple times and I thought a discussion of the various (available) options would be interesting. The one that I was immediately familiar with is Automator, which will be released with Tiger (OSX 10.4). Granted, this may not be a purely visual programming language, it […]

Social Computing in Business

With some recent buzz concerning social computing applications specifically targeted at making business connections, and I think some of them deserve a mention here (at the very least). LinkedIn – I got the chance to play around with this site and really enjoy this one concept: endorsements. To make a connection with someone, you must […]

Sneaky Phishing Attempt

This is, by far, one of the sneakiest phishing attempts that I’ve received, to date: http://cgi4.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?MfcISAPICommand=RedirectToDomain&DomainUrl=http%3A%2F%2F%32%30%33%2E%32%33%34%2E%32%35%2E%31%39%30%2FUpdateCenter%2FLogin%2F%3FMfcISAPISession%3DAAJbaQqzeHAAeMWZlHhlWXS2AlBXVShqAhQRfhgTDrferHCURstpAisNRqAhQfgfhgTDrferHCURstpAisNfgpAisNRqAhQRfhgTDrferHCUQRfqzeHAfdeMWZlHhlWXh If you’ll notice, the URL does appear to be actually at ebay.com (which it is), however they’re using a hidden command in this particular dll to redirect the user to their own, personal, phishing page. This is very sneaky, […]

Site Moved

I’ve successfully finished moving the web site from my user account at CSH over to ejohn.org (a domain which I’ve owned now for over half a decade). (Sorry to all those reading my RSS feed for the extra flush of entries) It’s an exciting time for this web site. I’m now receiving 200-250 unique visitors […]

Google Maps

Google released an interesting application the other day called Google Maps. Apart from the fact that it’s very well designed and very easy to use, there’s some fun stuff going on in the background that I really want to tinker with. More information concerning the actual tech behind the site can be found in this […]

Old Projects Added

I added a number of old projects last night that were long overdue for release. A list of them can be found below: AI::Markov – The Markov Model Perl module that I wrote when I was on co-op in the Lab for Applied Computing last year. CSH Interview Management – The web application that I […]
