I just finished up a mini-tour of ideaShrub that I think everyone will find of interest. The tour comes in the form of a mini-screencast for everyone to watch. This is my first attempt at making a screencast and I think it went fairly well (save for the lack of voice over and mouse cursor, but I’m working on fixing that for future ‘casts).
In this tour I cover a couple different aspects of the new site:
- A user’s main profile page
- A user’s shrub list (and the Create A Set and Create A Shrub widgets)
- A user’s contacts list
- All communities
- All people
- All shrubs
- Options, straight to Profile Editing
- A user’s main profile page (again)
- Shrub Editing (I saved the best for last!)
This portion includes moving leaves, creating leaves, editing leaves, navigation, changing text attributes (bold, underline, strikethrough), indenting, undenting)
As a note, the application itself is still a long ways off from being complete – I expect to be making a lot of progress within the next couple weeks and possibly launching at the beginning of July.

John, this app looks great from the screencast. Such a simple interface. Just going on what I see, it seems like a web-based OneNote, which is my favorite Microsoft app. I’m curious, what platform/language are you guys using to build it?

Ernie – thanks! Essentially, we’re trying to create an application that can be used to brainstorm ideas – but it’s definitely not limited to that. Some applications that we’ve thought of, thus far: Note taking, brainstorming, web logging, and to-do lists. Something else that we’re currently working on is the ability to collaborate, in real-time, on these items – so someone could be taking notes at the same time as you (for example). The frontend is Javascript/HTML, backend is Perl (but doesn’t have to be), and the database is MySQL.

Wow, this looks really great John.
Just a quick comment, not about the app, but the screencast: because it’s linked as a stand-alone swf file, when it opens in Firefox, it scales to fit the page, which looks really pretty ugly, and it’s an unfortunately distraction for your really nice-looking app. In general, I think screencasts look a lot better as QuickTime movies. (For example, any of the rails-related screencasts.)

I read a suggestion for making the swf display better – forcing it to be the exact resolution at which it was recorded – I’m going to check into it and see if I can fix it up. Thanks for the heads-up, though!
